No one would have seen Tom Cruise as a future celebrity when he was a kid. He came from a broken family and moved around a lot as a child, but that didn’t stop him from becoming one of the highest paid actors in the industry. Tom Cruise would later be known as one of the most important and powerful celebrities to date.
Childhood:
At a young age, Tom experienced hardship. From his parents divorce when he was 12, to being abused by his father, Thomas Cruise Mapother III. He learned from the start that not everyone has the greatest of intentions, but it never stopped Tom’s desire to succeed. Tom Cruise’s goal to be a Catholic Priest was later subsided by his affinity for acting and his dreams of becoming a celebrity.
Tom’s Career:
The beginning of Tom Cruise’s career is much like other well-known celebrities. After hard-knocks and small parts, Cruise finally landed a little role in Franco Zeffirelli’s romantic drama Endless Love. This would be the spring board of what would later be one of the most famous (and well paid) film stars of the century.
Following roles would increase his paycheck and his popularity. In the next decade, Cruise saw a major increase in jobs and public appeal. Some of the films he starred in the 80s and early 90s included Risky Business, Top Gun (a job he had initially decided to turn down, but then changed his mind and earned a $2,000,000 paycheck), Rain Man (which was nominated for eight Academy Awards), and Born on the Fourth of July - the movie that won him a Golden Globe.
His success didn’t stop there. He met the nineties and early 2000s with some of the most popular movies of all time. Titles which included Jerry McGuire and the quote “Show me the money!”, and the entire Mission Impossible franchise of movies have skyrocketed Tom Cruise into the public eye. However, this publicity has had its ups and its downs.
Having such a public and famous life has made Tom’s personal life a spectacle in most circles. Everything from his marriage to Katie Holmes, his religion and sexual orientation have come under the public criticism since his climb to blockbuster fame. But this does not diminish the fact that Tom is one of the highest paid and sought after figures in Hollywood. He is worthy of the phrase: “Show me the money!”
